Reviewing images

Managing the images you’ve taken is the job of CaptureDent’s™ “Review” page. Just as a light table lets you review conventional photographic slides, the array of thumbnail views on this page presents many images at once. CaptureDent goes far beyond the light table, becoming the key to your digital darkroom.

While on the “Review” page you may browse through the images, select one for processing (or just viewing) on the “Process” page, delete images (on the day they were taken only), add a note or a voice note to any image, and more.

Which images are shown?

In ordinary circumstances, all images for the active patient will be displayed on the the “Review” page. If a search has been used to select a smaller set of images, then you’ll see just those photos matching the criteria you specified.

If a multi-patient search is in effect, then the images shown could be from more than one patient. In this case, each thumbnail will show the Patient ID code for the patient to which it belongs (see below).

If the CaptureDent window hasn’t enough space to show all available thumbnails, a scroll bar will appear to the right of the array of thumbnails. You can resize the program’s window to show more thumbnails, if your display is large enough.

The thumbnails

The most important and obvious part of this page is the array of small “thumbnail” images, similar to 35mm (2×2" mount) photographic slides.

Each thumbnail shows a miniature version of the photograph it represents. For clarity, any annotations you may have placed on it aren’t shown in the thumbnails.

Status lamp

At the bottom right of each thumbnail is a small rectangular status lamp. This lamp may appear in various colors, indicating the status of the thumbnail…

Creation progress indicator

The first time you visit the “Review” page after taking a photo, that image’s thumbnail must be prepared. The status lamp will show bright red and you’ll see a progress bar move from left to right as the new miniature image is prepared.

Once this process is done, that thumbnail’s status lamp will turn dark green — indicating a valid, but un-selected, image — and CaptureDent will move on to the next thumbnail in sequence.

Thumbnail information block

Below the miniature photo, information about the photograph will appear. This will always include the date. When a multiple-patient image search is currently active, meaning that thumbnails of photos for several patients might be displayed, the Patient ID code will be shown on each thumbnail as well. If no multi-patient search is active, then the time will be displayed along with the date.

Note: Conventional cameras that are capable of recording a time and date stamp for each photo do so by imprinting the information directly onto the image, obliterating photographic details that could be important. CaptureDent records its time and date stamp separately from the photographic image itself, leaving the picture untouched.

Mouth region indicator

If a photo has been assigned a mouth region, an abbreviation will appear below the time stamp and/or Patient ID code telling what tooth, teeth, or other region the photo depicts.

Here are the kinds of mouth regions that CaptureDent understands, each with an example of how CaptureDent displays its abbreviation:

Note and voice note icons

Each image that has notes or voice notes attached to it will display an icon for each note. You can click any icon to jump to the “Notes” page, where you may read or listen to that note (and all other notes for the active patient).

Print layout assignment icons

While you’re on the “Review” page printing images, one or more thumbnails may be marked with color-coded print layout assignment icons.

A print layout assignment icon is a miniature schematic representation of the printout. The icon’s overall color represents the basic layout (how many image blocks there are and how they’re arranged). One block in each layout icon will be highlighted in a bright color, indicating where within the layout CaptureDent will print the photo on which the icon appears.

When choosing what photo to place in which position on a printed sheet, an icon will appear on each thumbnail to help remind you of your previous choices.

Tip: In some cases, you may choose to print the same image in more than one position on a layout. See the manual’s Printing images section for details on this and other printing-related issues.

Selecting an image

When you click anywhere on a thumbnail, that image will be selected. Its selection lamp will light up green. Until you select another image or change to a different patient, this is the image you’ll work on when you go to the “Process” page. It’s also the image that various other picture-management functions will act upon.

Deleting an image

On the calendar day an image was taken, you may delete it. After the end of the day, it is part of that patient’s record and cannot be deleted.

To delete an image, first select it by clicking its thumbnail. Then click the “Delete image” button, with the icon of a trash can, in the “Review” page’s toolbar.

Searching for images

Found on the “Review” page, CaptureDent’s image search facility is powerful, flexible, and easy to use. For full details, refer to the Image searches section of this manual.

Notes and voice notes

On the “Review” page you may add text or voice notes to the selected image. These topics are so important that they’ve got their own section in the manual.

Printing images

The “Review” page is where you’ll go to print images. For a complete explanation of CaptureDent’s photo printing capability, see the manual’s Printing images section.
